Another Four Detentions Made in Link to Paris Louvre Museum Precious Gems Robbery

Four additional individuals are now under arrest within the framework of the ongoing investigation into the recent heist of priceless gems at the famous Paris museum, per reports from the Paris prosecutor's office.

Details of the Latest Detentions

Two male suspects, in their late thirties, and a duo of females, aged 31 and 40, were taken into custody this Tuesday. They all reside in the Île-de-France region.

One of those detained is considered as the remaining individual of a four-man gang that allegedly carried out the daytime theft, according to French media. The other three alleged robbers have already been arrested and formally accused, according to officials.

Law enforcement has been granted as much as 96 hours to interrogate the suspects. No trace has yet been uncovered of the taken jewelry - valued at 88 million euros (76 million pounds; 102 million dollars) - which were stolen on October 19th.

Prior Accusations and Rejections

Four individuals have already been charged in relation to the robbery - a trio of males and one female, who similarly reside within the greater Paris.

A woman in her late thirties was charged earlier this month with complicity in organised theft and criminal conspiracy with a view to committing a crime.

Separately, one male suspect, 37 years old, was indicted for robbery and illegal conspiracy.

Both of these individuals, who remain unnamed in public records, have disavowed any participation.

The Method of the Robbery Was Carried Out

The heist happened when the group of four men used a stolen vehicle-mounted mechanical lift to gain access to the Galerie d'Apollon (Gallery of Apollo) via a balcony near the Seine River.

The men used a circular saw to crack open showcases housing the jewellery.

The perpetrators stayed inside for just 240 seconds and made their escape on two motor scooters stationed outside at 09:38 in the morning, before changing to vehicles.

One of the stolen items - a crown - was dropped during the escape but eight other items of jewelry - such as a necklace with emeralds and diamonds that Emperor Napoleon presented to his second spouse, the Empress Marie-Louise - were taken.

Security Shortcomings and Consequences

It has been stated that the theft was performed by petty criminals instead of sophisticated criminal organizations.

Shortly after the theft, it was revealed by the Louvre's director that the only camera observing the Galerie d'Apollon was directed away from the balcony the thieves climbed over to commit the burglary.

Louvre leadership has later confessed that the museum had failed in its duties, but disputed allegations of security being ignored - saying that from the beginning of her tenure in the year 2021 she had been warning constantly of the need for more investment.

Enhanced Security Measures

In the wake of the robbery, protective protocols have been strengthened for French heritage sites.

The museum has moved a selection of its most valuable gems to the national bank following the heist.
