Big 12 Conference Chief Labels Notre Dame Remarks Following CFP Snub as ‘Completely Out of Bounds’

At a notable criticism, Brett Yormark declared that Notre Dame's athletic director, Pete Bevacqua, was “totally out of bounds” for recent comments concerning the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Tension

The Fighting Irish has a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a full member in all other sports. Bevacqua has argued that the ACC harmed Notre Dame’s chances to enter the College Football Playoff, instead advocating for the spot of the University of Miami.

“The ACC do wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we offer substantial football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would go out of your way to try to hurt us in this process,” Bevacqua remarked.

The Hurricanes ultimately earned the CFP berth over Notre Dame, primarily due to winning the head-to-head contest between the two teams. Bevacqua additionally stated that the ACC ran a coordinated social media effort over multiple weeks showing its preference for Miami.

An Egregious Rebuke

Later on Tuesday, Yormark addressed the criticism at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his behavior has been egregious,” Yormark commented. “He is completely out of bounds in his approach and if he was in the room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

The pushback is particularly notable given Bevacqua’s unique role. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee alongside the ten FBS conference commissioners, representing the concerns of football independent Notre Dame.

Historical Context and Speculative Moves

Yormark further remarked the support the ACC gave Notre Dame during the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, giving the Irish a complete conference schedule and a berth in its title game.

“It has been unacceptable,” Yormark reiterated. “It’s been unacceptable going after the ACC commissioner, when they helped Notre Dame during Covid...”

Talk had circulated about Notre Dame possibly splitting with the ACC and aligning with the Big 12. However, Yormark's public reprimand on Tuesday appear to make such a move less likely in the near term.

The Irish, who reached the CFP championship game last season, have indicated they will decline a postseason invitation after failing to qualify this year.
