Discarded Deep-Sea Nets from France Evolve into Essential Defense To Counter Enemy Drones in Ukraine

On the harbor docks of the Breton shoreline, piles of discarded fishing nets now represent a common sight.

The usable duration of ocean trawling nets generally extends between one to two years, following this period they become damaged and unusable.

Presently, this marine-grade mesh, originally designed for harvesting ocean species from the marine bottom, is finding new application for an unexpected target: hostile aerial vehicles.

Charitable Project Transforms Marine Waste

A coastal assistance group has sent two shipments of nets totaling 280km to the war-torn nation to safeguard troops and residents along the frontline where conflict intensifies.

Russian forces use inexpensive unmanned aircraft armed with combat payloads, guiding them by distance operation for distances of up to 25 kilometers.

"Over the last two years, the war has evolved. Before we didn't even think about drones, but now it's a unmanned vehicle battle," stated a humanitarian organizer.

Strategic Implementation of Trawling Gear

Defense units use the nets to construct tunnels where unmanned aircraft rotors become entangled. This approach has been described as arachnids capturing insects in a net.

"Military representatives explained they require specific random fishing gear. They received multiple that are unusable," the organizer explained.

"The nets we are sending are made of specialized material and used for ocean trawling to catch powerful sea creatures which are exceptionally strong and hit the nets with a strength similar to that of a drone."

Expanding Uses

Originally deployed by healthcare workers defending field hospitals near the combat zone, the nets are now implemented on thoroughfares, crossings, the medical facility access points.

"It's remarkable that such basic material functions so efficiently," commented the humanitarian director.

"There is no shortage of marine gear in this region. It presents a challenge to know where to send them as several companies that repurpose the gear have ceased operations."

Operational Challenges

The charitable organization was formed after community members approached the founders requesting assistance with clothing, food and medical supplies for Ukraine.

Twenty volunteers have transported two truck shipments of humanitarian assistance 2,300 kilometers to the Polish-Ukrainian frontier.

"When we learned that Ukraine sought protective gear, the coastal residents responded immediately," commented the humanitarian coordinator.

Drone Warfare Evolution

Russia is using FPV unmanned aircraft similar to those on the retail industry that can be guided by wireless command and are then packed with explosives.

Enemy operators with instant visual data direct them to their destinations. In various locations, military personnel report that no movement occurs without drawing the notice of groups of "killer" self-destruct vehicles.

Protective Strategies

The fishing nets are suspended from structures to establish protective passageways or used to cover trenches and vehicles.

Defense unmanned aircraft are also outfitted with pieces of netting to release onto hostile aircraft.

By July this year, Ukraine was dealing with more than 500 drones each twenty-four hour period.

International Aid

Hundreds of tonnes of used fishing gear have also been provided by marine workers in Scandinavian nations.

A former fisheries committee president commented that regional fishermen are particularly willing to support the defense cause.

"They experience satisfaction to know their used material is going to assist in protection," he stated publicly.

Funding Limitations

The charity no longer has the monetary means to transport further gear this year and negotiations are occurring for Ukraine to provide transport to collect the material.

"We plan to support obtain the gear and load them but we are without the financial capacity to continue running convoys ourselves," commented the humanitarian coordinator.

Practical Restrictions

A Ukrainian military spokesperson explained that protective mesh corridors were being installed across the Donetsk region, about three-quarters of which is now reported to be occupied and controlled by opposition military.

She added that hostile aircraft operators were continuously developing ways to penetrate the mesh.

"Protective material cannot serve as a panacea. They are just a single component of defense from drones," she clarified.

An ex-agricultural business owner shared that the Ukrainians he had met were moved by the assistance from French fishing towns.

"The fact that those in the coastal economy the other side of Europe are sending nets to help them defend themselves has caused emotional reactions to their eyes," he finished.
