Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and impeding a legislative process.
His legal representative filed the answer acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would attempt to have the legal matter terminated for multiple factors including that his the accused, a critic of former President Trump, was being targeted.
James Comey was formally accused just days after the former president urged his top legal official to proceed against him.
Judicial Process
During the hearing on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the magistrate they aimed to present multiple petitions to throw out the case before a legal hearing, arguing the legal action was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to take over the legal matter.
James Comey's proceedings was first handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from the former president after his probe into another rival - the New York official - failed to file indictments.
Judicial Environment
The former director appeared in positive mood as he entered the court on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and being lighthearted. He was supported by his wife, his wife and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.
Upon hearing to the magistrate state his rights and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he comprehended the accusations.
"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he told the proceedings.
Historical Information
The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about four months into Trump's first term as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.

Charges against Clinton were not filed, leading to criticism from Republicans as well.
Ongoing Accusations
Prosecutors claim Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he misled the Senate by stating he had not authorized a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to news outlets data about the agency probes.
Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, block and delay" the panel by providing untrue information to it.
Individual Responses

"We have been aware for years that there are costs to challenging the former president," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
The accusations against James Comey emerged after the former president published on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, charge Mr Comey and others.
