An IT issue at the airport's air traffic control meant no aircraft could enter or leave the facility.

Passenger services have restarted at Edinburgh Airport after a significant air traffic control outage brought the international hub to a standstill.

Every arrival and departure were halted after an systems problem that arose around 08:30.

Some passengers were left waiting in planes on the runway during the disruption.

Flights Resume with Ongoing Delays

A statement indicated at 10:40 that operations had restarted, and thanked passengers for their "understanding and cooperation".

However, significant disruption are expected to continue throughout the day. Flights to London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been cancelled, with a host of additional flights facing hold-ups.

A spokesperson had initially projected that dozens of flights could be affected.

"Travelers are urged to contact their airlines for the latest information on their booked journeys," the statement added.

Officials linked the full ground stop to an systems failure with its air traffic control provider.

Flyers continue to be advised to verify the schedule of their trip before departing to the hub as backlogs are managed.
