I'm Known As the ‘Penis and Vagina’ Kid from the Classic 1990 Film: A Look Back.
The Austrian Oak is universally recognized as an action movie legend. But, during the peak of his star power in the late 20th century, he also starred in several critically acclaimed comedies. The standout film is Kindergarten Cop, which hits its 35th anniversary this winter.
The Story and That Line
In the hit comedy, Schwarzenegger portrays a undercover cop who masquerades as a kindergarten teacher to locate a fugitive. Throughout the story, the crime storyline serves as a loose framework for the star to share adorable moments with his young class. The most unforgettable features a student named Joseph, who spontaneously rises and declares the stoic star, “Males have a penis, females have a vagina.” Schwarzenegger deadpans, “Thanks for the tip.”
That iconic child was played by former young actor Miko Hughes. Beyond this role encompassed a character arc on Full House as the bully to the famous sisters and the haunting part of the child who returns in the screen translation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. Hughes remains active today, with a slate of movies in development. Additionally, he frequently attends the con circuit. He recently discussed his experiences from the filming of the classic over three decades on.
Behind the Scenes
Q: To begin, how old were you when you filmed Kindergarten Cop?
Miko Hughes: I think I was four. I was the most junior of all the kids on set.
That's impressive, I don't recall being four. Do you remember anything from that time?
Yeah, to a degree. They're flashes. They're like mental photographs.
Do you recall how you got the part in Kindergarten Cop?
My mother, mainly would bring me to auditions. Sometimes it was like a cattle call. There'd be dozens of children and we'd all patiently queue, go into the room, be in there for a very short time, read a small part they wanted and then leave. My parents would help me learn the words and then, as soon as I could read, that was some of the first material I was reading.
Do you have a specific memory of meeting Arnold? What was your impression of him?
He was very kind. He was enjoyable. He was nice, which arguably makes sense. It would have been odd if he was a dick to all the kids in the classroom, that surely wouldn't foster a good work environment. He was a joy to have on set.
“It would have been odd if he was a dick to all the kids in the classroom.”
I knew he was a huge celebrity because I was told, but I had not actually watched his movies. I felt the importance — like, that's cool — but he wasn't scary to me. He was simply playful and I just wanted to play with him when he had time. He was busy, obviously, but he'd kind of play with us here and there, and we would hang off of his arms. He'd show his strength and we'd be holding on. He was incredibly giving. He purchased for each child in the classroom a personal stereo, which at the time was the hottest tech. That was the coolest device, that iconic bright yellow cassette player. I listened to the Power Rangers soundtrack and the Ninja Turtles soundtrack for a long time on that thing. It finally gave out. I also have a genuine metal whistle. He had the coach whistle, and the kids all were gifted copies as well.
Do you remember your experience as being positive?
You know, it's amusing, that movie is such a landmark. It was such a big movie, and it was an incredible opportunity, and you would think, looking back now, I would want my memories to be of collaborating with Schwarzenegger, working with [director] Ivan Reitman, visiting Astoria, being on a professional set, but my memories are of being a selective diner at lunch. For instance, they got everyone pizza, but I didn't even like pizza. All I would eat was the toppings only. Then, the original Game Boy was new. That was the hot thing, and I was quite skilled. I was the youngest and some of the older kids would ask for my help to beat difficult stages on games because I was able to, and I was really proud of that. So, it's all childhood recollections.
The Infamous Moment
OK, the penis and vagina line, do you remember how it happened? Did you grasp the meaning?
At the time, I likely didn't understand what the word provocative meant, but I knew it was provocative and it got a big laugh. I was aware it was kind of something I shouldn't normally say, but I was given approval in this case because it was humorous.
“It was a difficult decision for her.”
How it originated, from what I understand, was they were still developing characters. Some character lines were established early on, but once they had the entire ensemble assembled, it wasn't necessarily improv, but they refined it on set and, reportedly the filmmakers came to my mom and said, "We have an idea. We want Miko to have this line. Are you okay with this?" My mom didn't answer immediately. She said, "I need to consider this, I'll decide tomorrow" and took a short while. It was a tough call for her. She said she had doubts, but she believed it will probably be one of the unforgettable moments from the movie and she was right.
