Major Web Failure Impacts Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps
A large-scale web outage has affected dozens websites and apps around the world, and users noting issues accessing the internet after problems at the cloud computing system.
The affected apps encompass Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-managed platforms like its main retail site and the Ring security device manufacturer.
Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was affected as well as its affiliates Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of issues using the the tax authority site on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, many Ring device owners turned to online platforms to report their home gadgets were malfunctioning.
Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of disruptions on individual platforms reached the tens of thousands for each app.
The company stated that the outage began in the eastern region of the US at Amazon Web Services, a division that supplies vital online framework for a host of companies, who rent out resources on the company's servers. AWS is the most extensive cloud computing platform.
Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “increased problem frequencies and delays” for the cloud services in a zone on the east coast of the America. The ripple effect seemed to affect services globally, with the outage tracking website showing issues with the same sites in different parts of the world.
The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that tracks web disruptions, also reported a rise in problems on Monday morning, including several cases situated in the Virginia area, the location of the eastern US data center where AWS said the outage began.
