Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Secure First Victories After Player Detentions
The Miami Heat scored 86 first-half points versus the Grizzlies
The Heat earned a decisive 146-114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA match after guard Rozier was arrested over alleged unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a broad FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
But, the Miami team were not distracted as they scored eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year history.
Adebayo led the way with 24 points and afterwards said Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He's had a real positive impact on our locker room.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces the situation."
Portland also secured their initial match since the arrests, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Chauncey's absence and leading the team to a convincing 139-119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.
"Everyone experienced great experiences with Billups and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests
Speaking about the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.
"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner also said an league probe into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they announced recently was an charge.
"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Terry.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise in this case between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
