Pacific Bluefin Fish Fetches Record Bid of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.
The successful offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a nationwide sushi restaurant group, which runs restaurants throughout Japan and internationally.
"An inaugural tuna brings good luck," remarked the company president, a familiar figure at the annual January sale.
Known as the Tuna King, this businessman is noted for submitting high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Record-Setting Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to the press that he was "surprised at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price soared rapidly."
This most recent acquisition exceeds his own record purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to break his own record yet again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by exorbitant prices. Last year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different culinary group, which indicated the fish would be served at its locations nationwide.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Swift Service
The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly sliced up for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a good way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," remarked one happy patron.
