The actress declares new Bridget Jones statue is “adorable”, adding, “It’s sweeter than me.”

The recently installed statue was unveiled in Leicester Square on the start of the week.

Renée Zellweger has described the new statue of Bridget Jones as “delightful”, adding, “I think, it’s much cuter than me.”

Zellweger was talking as the new statue honoring the beloved figure she played for many years was uncovered in the iconic London square on the start of the week.

Bridget Jones was created in the mid-1990s by author Helen Fielding, and originally translated for the movies in the early 2000s. The fourth film came out earlier this year.

Commenting at the unveiling, Fielding did not dismiss continuing the series, remarking you should “avoid closing doors.”

The star added that people everywhere can connect with Bridget, which highlights her enduring charm.

“Her sensitivity, her humanness,” she said. “We see our own reflections in her, we recognise ourselves in her struggles.

“It makes it OK for the rest of us to be truly who we are. Imperfect.”

The persona of Bridget Jones touched many women’s hearts, who found solace in her ups and downs.

From her humorous work blunders, to her notorious granny pants, Bridget connected with a age group who found a mirror in her—and has gained a fresh wave of younger fans too.

The new installment in the franchise, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, was debuted in February, and shows Bridget navigating life as a solo parent and tackling contemporary romance.

It earned mixed reviews, but recorded the highest theatrical launch ever for a love story in the British Isles, according to data.

The film was promoted as the conclusion in the franchise—but speaking at the ceremony, two superfans, Faye and Wayne, said they were sure there would be a next chapter.

“There were so many things that were left unresolved at the end of the latest installment,” said Faye.

“Her character keeps changing. I hope to be with Bridget Jones all the way to the later years,” added Wayne.

When questioned about the prospect of a new chapter in Bridget Jones’ story, Fielding said: “Anything is possible. Inspiration arrive as a author. So if a narrative appeared that I thought was real and engaging and fresh then I would write it.”

Certain critics think the imperfect and human heroine, who’s obsessed over her appearance and relationship status, is not the strongest example.

And Fielding personally has acknowledged in the past that elements of the story seem less relevant today.

Bridget Jones’s Diary couldn’t be written today, set now, because all those men in the office would be sacked,” she said in the past. “That was a distinct period.”

But reflecting on Monday, she said she wished the overarching idea of the story would continue to chime for readers.

“I think, to have the reassurance of observing a character that you can relate to, because they are genuine and human and emotionally honest, it’s like having the companion you can be true with,” she said.

The statue is the first to celebrate a rom com on the square’s public art walk.

The Scenes in the Square trail originally launched in recently with the introduction of several statues including comedy legends, Mary Poppins, Batman, Bugs Bunny, Don Lockwood, Paddington Bear, Mr Bean and Wonder Woman.

Since then, sculptures of Harry Potter, the royal chair from Game of Thrones, Clifford the Big Red Dog and Indiana Jones have been added.
